How Phenylketonuria Affects Brain Function and Development

Phenylketonuria (PKU) might sound like a complex term, but its impact on brain function and development is profound and worth exploring. What is Phenylketonuria?

PKU is a genetic disorder characterized by the body’s inability to metabolize phenylalanine, an amino acid found in many protein-containing foods. Normally, an enzyme called phenylalanine hydroxylase converts phenylalanine into another amino acid, tyrosine. However, individuals with PKU lack this enzyme, leading to a buildup of phenylalanine in the blood and brain.


The Role of Phenylalanine in Brain Function

Phenylalanine is not inherently harmful, but when levels become elevated due to PKU, it can cross the blood-brain barrier and interfere with normal brain development and function.
